The Magnificence of Campitello Matese

The Magnificence of Campitello Matese

Campitello Matese is a place where the charm and grandeur of Molise’s nature will overwhelm you, leaving you breathless.

Located on the slopes of Mount Miletto with its plateau extending within the Matese Massif, it is home to one of the most important ski resorts in southern Italy, making it a perfect destination not only in winter but also during the warmer seasons when the melting snow forms the Lago del Matese.

At your disposal, you will have 19.9 km of ski slopes to explore, with 5 ski lifts. If you are a fan of snowboarding, Campitello offers a SnowPark, while for younger visitors, there is a FunPark to enjoy a day of sports and nature.

There is also the opportunity to go on guided snowmobile and quad excursions.

Not Just Nature, But Plenty of Culture Too

Campitello Matese is undoubtedly known for its natural beauty, yet, like the rest of Molise, it will surprise you with the charm of the municipality to which it belongs: San Massimo.
Once a beautiful medieval village, its magnificence is still evident today in the remains of the medieval walls that once surrounded the castle, or in the Church of Santa Maria delle Fratte, with its Gothic-style pointed entrance portal featuring the emblem of the Knights of Malta to which the church belongs.

Noteworthy are the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, destroyed and rebuilt several times, the Monument to the Fallen of the Great War, and the Fountain located at a panoramic viewpoint.

We recommend exploring the countryside of San Massimo, where along your path, you will admire rural dwellings and circular towers once used as dovecotes and, in the Middle Ages, served a strategic role in protection.

Excursions, Trails, and Various Routes

During the warmer seasons, Campitello Matese is a place to explore thanks to the many trails managed by the Italian Alpine Club, which can be enjoyed on foot, by mountain bike, or even on horseback.
One of the most beautiful experiences to have at least once in a lifetime is the excursion to the summit of Mount Miletto, which can be done on foot or, for those with less experience, via a cable car.

If you’re lucky, on clear days, you will be able to see the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Adriatic Sea, Mount Vesuvius, and the Tavoliere delle Puglie.

From Lago del Matese, various trekking routes begin, and you can rent canoes and kayaks, or cycle along the CicloLago del Matese, where you will discover enchanted trails around the lake.

Another must-see is the Bosco di Pietra, a unique place where large beech trees have grown above the stones that blend so numerous into the landscape they almost look like giant flowers; fossils dating back to the Mesozoic era can also be found here.
