The ‘Ndocciata: The Largest Fire Ritual in the City of Millenary Bells
Recognized as a Patrimonio d’Italia per la Tradizione since 2011, Agnone’s ‘Ndocciata is one of the world’s oldest fire rituals.
Today, it is a cherished Christmas tradition, though many scholars believe the fiery torches are rooted in pagan solstice rituals tied to December 21.
Undoubtedly, the ‘Ndocciata has become the symbolic event of the “Athens of the Samnites,” attracting visitors from all over Italy. It is a truly unique event that one must witness at least once in a lifetime.
What Happens During the ‘Ndocciata
On this special day, torchbearers gather near the hospital in the early afternoon.
At dusk, the torches (‘ndocce) are lit—ranging from small single torches carried by children to massive structures of over 20 torches bound together.
A River of Fire Through Agnone
The torches, made from white fir wood and dried broom, are prepared months in advance.
The event begins with the toll of the largest bell in the Athens of the Samnites, located in the bell tower of Sant’Antonio Church.
Torchbearers from the five districts of Agnone—Guastra, Capammonde e Capaballe, Sant’Onofrio, Colle Sente, and San Quirico—proudly march down the town’s main street.
Their procession forms a river of fire, illuminating and warming the course of Agnone, showcasing the community’s strong connection to its traditions.
Fire Circles and the “Bonfire of Brotherhood”
Torchbearers don’t just walk—they often gather to form fiery circles or spin individually in mesmerizing performances.
The grand finale features the merging of all torches into a gigantic blaze, known as the Bonfire of Brotherhood. Here, the districts celebrate together, joined by visitors snapping photos, enjoying local delicacies, and sipping red wine.

Two Annual Celebrations
To allow more people to experience the ‘Ndocciata, the event is held twice each year:
- December 8: The Extraordinary ‘Ndocciata
This event commemorates December 8, 1996, when the ‘Ndocce were showcased in St. Peter’s Square, warming the heart of Saint John Paul II.
Over time, this extraordinary edition has become a tradition, drawing tourists who wish to explore Agnone, its culinary delights, and its rich traditions. - December 24: The Traditional ‘Ndocciata
For locals, the Christmas Eve celebration is the true ‘Ndocciata. Passed down through generations, it includes the historic capes worn by shepherds to endure the harsh winters of Alto Molise.
The evening culminates in a live Nativity scene organized by the Camillo Carlomagno Cultural Cenacle and the theater group Le 4C. This Nativity, first held in 1959, is the oldest in Molise.
The ‘Ndocciata Beyond Agnone
Although rooted in Agnone, the ‘Ndocciata has occasionally been performed elsewhere:
- 1996: St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City
- 2011: Assisi, in front of the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli
- 2015: Milan’s Expo, illuminating the Darsena and Navigli
However, the full spectacle is best experienced in Agnone, where its history began.
The Bell Foundry and Agnone’s Other Treasures
While visiting, don’t miss the Marinelli Pontifical Bell Foundry. With over 1,000 years of history, it’s the oldest company in Europe and among the ten oldest in the world.
The foundry still produces bells using traditional methods, with their sound resonating from bell towers worldwide.
Explore the town’s Venetian quarter (Ripa), where palaces adorned with the Lion of St. Mark recall the artisans who settled here from Venice in the 11th century.
Agnone also boasts fascinating churches, ancient copper foundries, and artisan workshops.
Gastronomy and Local Delicacies
Agnone’s culinary offerings are exceptional. From high-quality salami to renowned cheeses like caciocavallo, the town’s flavors are unforgettable.
During the ‘Ndocciata, visitors can sample local cheeses made on the spot and indulge in sweet treats like almond, walnut, and honey-filled wafers (ostie ripiene).
Horseback Adventures in Alto Molise
For nature lovers, Agnone offers opportunities for horseback riding.
Nearby, Staffoli hosts the Corsalonga Western Show in August, a thrilling event featuring saloons, competitions, and horse-drawn carriage rides, blending the beauty of Molise with a touch of the Wild West.
