Castellino del Biferno, the town that “mints” the Bourbon currency
Castellino del Biferno is a village of just over 500 souls. But it has often made headlines. Not only in Molise.
One of the most remarkable initiatives concerns the “parallel currency” created by the Municipality, launched during the height of the pandemic.
Mayor Enrico Fratangelo, inspired by a provision in the Consolidated Law on Local Authorities, distributed funds to low-income families using the ducato, the currency of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
With ducati, people can buy food. The Municipality then converts them into euros for businesses.
But this wasn’t the only initiative that brought Castellino del Biferno into the national spotlight.
The statue dedicated to the “god” of football: Diego Armando Maradona
On October 30, 2021, to celebrate the birthday of Diego Armando Maradona, the village unveiled a statue dedicated to what many consider to be the greatest footballer of all time.
The previous year—no surprise—Bourbon coins dedicated to Maradona were minted.
But those who visit Castellino can rest assured: the official currency is the euro, of course. However, with a bit of luck, you might get your hands on some collectible ducati.
Beyond these curiosities, what interesting experiences does this village offer?
From a geomorphological perspective alone, Castellino del Biferno is a unique village.
Exploring the “moving village”
It is affected by slow but constant soil erosion. It is, in fact, known as “the moving village.” Landslides have tormented the area.
However, the residents have turned necessity into virtue.
For example, the Via Roma landslide has been secured and transformed into a playground.
Meanwhile, the Orto Udone landslide site is now home to a multi-aromatic geobotanical park.
Despite geological instability, the village endures.
The residents proudly preserve the customs and traditions of their village, which was originally built on a sandstone ridge to defend against Saracen raids.
Visitors can enjoy truly unique and fascinating experiences.
The Church of San Pietro in Vinculis and the Chapel of Madonna delle Grazie
The historic center is charming. One of its most precious jewels is the mother church of San Pietro in Vinculis.
Inside, 13 valuable statues are preserved, among which the statues of the Assumption and Saint John the Baptist stand out.
There is also a choir made of walnut wood, dating back to the 18th century.
In the upper part of the village, you can admire a Chapel dedicated to Madonna delle Grazie, which dates back to the 14th century.
In the Town Hall square, there is the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows.
Aside from historical and religious sites, Castellino also welcomes travelers with authentic flavors and unique traditions.
Discovering traditions: the Pizzicantò
In June, for example, you can take part in the celebrations in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua.
The people of Castellino have a deep devotion to the Portuguese Saint.
On his feast day, the village comes alive with a great tradition: the Pizzicantò.
Real human pyramids parade through the village streets, singing a traditional song.
Accompanying the singers are musicians playing accordions and organettos.
Castellino del Biferno at the table: the triumph of the Mediterranean diet
In the evening, the delicious Sagra delle Sagnitelle takes place, featuring pasta served with “fake broth”—a sauce without meat.
Instead, it is flavored with cheese and eggs.
Local food and wine are truly worth discovering.
Rooted in peasant culture, the cuisine is deeply connected to the Mediterranean diet.
Olive oil and vegetables enhance many dishes, naturally accompanied by local wine.
But the journey to discover Castellino del Biferno doesn’t end at the table.
Its surroundings also cater to lovers of hiking and outdoor activities.
Trails to explore on foot, by bike, or on horseback
The natural trails in the area are ideal for trekking.
They can also be explored by bicycle—preferably a mountain bike—or on horseback.
Along the routes, there are several rest areas. You can also take advantage of the many fountains scattered throughout the territory.
These have been restored in recent years to provide additional services for visitors.
The oasis with an outdoor swimming pool
For hiking and outdoor enthusiasts, the key attraction is the Colle di Toro Nature Oasis.
In addition to nature trails, visitors can take a dip in the park’s outdoor swimming pool.
The oasis also features a bocce court, a nursery, and a well-equipped picnic area.
Ultimately, if you love nature and rich local traditions, your next destination should be Castellino del Biferno.
Here, you’ll enjoy incredibly fun experiences, thanks to the creativity of the locals.
And don’t worry if you don’t have any ducati on hand.
The residents will always welcome you like a king. A Bourbon one, of course.
