Strolling through murals and Albanian culture
Ethnic and Linguistic Minorities in Molise are particularly present in Campomarino, a seaside town of Albanian origin that gazes toward the nation where it all began.
The town was founded by Albanians who, after being defeated by the Turks, fled and took refuge in Molise. However, some findings suggest that the area was already inhabited during the Bronze Age.
The historic center holds the town’s main attractions, the most significant being the Church of Santa Maria a Mare. With its underlying crypt and prominent bell tower, it dominates the skyline of Campomarino.
Walking through the old town’s alleys, visitors can admire murals depicting Arbëreshë culture, illustrating sacred images and folk traditions.
The area is also home to a defensive tower, Torre Ramitelli. The name is also linked to the Ramitelli Airfield, a military airport built by the U.S. Army during World War II, with some remnants still visible today.
Campomarino’s pristine sea and beaches have earned it the prestigious Blue Flag award for several years.
As a seaside destination, seafood is a must, with the town’s signature dish being fish soup with peas.
Among the numerous events, many festivals and celebrations take place during the summer season.
