Departure FromCivitacampomarano
The Molise region, due to its privileged position at the center of the transhumance economic system and at the heart of the peninsula, in the shortest crossing point from east to west, was particularly sought after by mercenaries and military leaders who, in the service of European rulers, sought to conquer the best lands. This is the case of Paolo di Sangro who, during the decisive battle of Sessano in 1442, betrayed the Angioini, for whom he had fought until then, and switched sides to the Aragonesi, ensuring their victory.
In return, among other rewards, he received the Castle of Civitacampomarano, which, starting from his intervention, was transformed into the imposing fortress we still see today.
Three circular towers and a massive defensive wall support the walkway and the rooms dedicated to the guard and weapon storage. The castle was also equipped with a drawbridge, a small chapel, prisons, service areas such as warehouses, stables, and kitchens.
The noble floors of the castle are beautiful and bright. From every vantage point of the castle, the view of the surrounding territory is magnificent.
